Sue Scheff on the success of Locks of Love Event!
The following was written by Lorraine Colpitts after her fantastic Locks of Love Event!
Hello there!
I would like to share information and highlights of the recent Locks of Love Fundraiser held September 15th, 2007 at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer, Maine.
We gathered 240 bags of hair and many $$$ funds to help with the costs of processing!!!
It was amazing….who knew that we would have a line out the door, and people waiting for over 3 hours to donate their hair?
Special thanks to the following: Jeff’s Catering, for not only providing us with an elegant, spacious, and beautifully decorated setting, but also for a delicious social buffet, (complete with chocolate fountain.) But also to, Lisa, Jeff’s wife, who took many before and after photos, printed them and provided them to me…she was the ultimate hostess…and kept the buffet fresh, many hours more than we contracted for….
Special thanks to the hairdressers, who set up shop, then stood on their feet for more than 6 hours… (Again, who knew?) The hairdressers were mostly from Scissor Excitement 1 (Sharon, Hampden) and Scissor Excitement II (Carrie, Bangor), and Lois Commeau from Headlines (Bangor), who was the coordinator of all the stylists, and Jamie Ferris. Their commitment throughout this whole process has been amazing!!! They contributed more than 50 bags of hair prior to the event! They were patient, kind, and professional in making sure the donor’s hair was not “just cut” but, shaped and styled…
Special thanks to Jim Nickerson, who donated his Emcee and DJ services to the Event. He was awesome…He dubbed several of the younger donors the “Locks of Love Dancers”, and led them in many line dances…too cute!
Thanks to all who contributed prizes for drawing for the donors of the evening! We ended up with 50+ prizes for random drawings for donors throughout the evening!
Thanks to the local Media who covered our event: Channel 7 WVII was generous in their coverage of this event, as was Bangor Daily News and the Weekly. Joni Averill also featured this event in one of her recent columns. Bangor Metro Magazine was the first to introduce our event in June, 2007. We would like to thank Tori for her generosity in featuring our story. Radio station 100.3 fm talked of our event the entire day, and we had many walk-ins because of it…Thanks to all!
Thanks to our donor with the ‘longest’ hair, Nancy Blanchard of Old Town who came in with 44” of hair and donated a hearty 30”. Also thanks to the Marden family of Frankfort for allowing their son Cameron’s (4) first haircut to be so worthy…the entire family offered their hair!
Lastly, special thanks to my friends, and family, and employees of Safe and Sound who sponsored this event. My Spokes model and niece Sydney Leonard donated 12” of hair, as did my two daughters in law, my 5 yr old granddaughter, Niomi…my 3 yr old niece Kathryn, (who was the youngest donor), her sister Elizabeth, who gave 8”, and my dear friend Laurie Lizotte who worked tirelessly and specially grew and donated 8” of her hair, as did I.
Other close friends and family members who could not donate hair gave gifts of time, and prizes for donors…They worked hard gathering prizes, hostessing, directing families and donors and signing them up. Thanks so much Mom, Susan, Kristen, Joan, Donna, Kim, Alicia, Marcia, Betsy, and too many others to mention! I could not have done this without you!!
I appreciate you all and will see you all back next year for the Second Annual Event in August!

Sue Scheff - Parent Advocate
One of my dearest friends' and colleagues, Lorraine Colpitts, is sponsoring an event in Maine that will help many children that are suffering with the side effects of Cancer and other illnesses by donating hair pieces.
I actually met Lorraine through my beloved friend that helped me start P.U.R.E. over 7 years ago - Donna Headrick. Unfortunately, Donna passed away in July 2002 and wasn't able to see how far her mentorship helped me to help others.
I first learned of Locks of Love when my good friend lost her 8 year old daughter to Leukemia.
Lorraine is not a stranger to helping kids and families. She owns and operates Safe and Sound Transportation that safely and respectfully transport teens into quality schools and programs. She gives parents a sense of security and genuinely cares about her clients.

Locks of Love event to benefit ill children
By BDN Staff
Thursday, August 30, 2007 - Bangor Daily News
BREWER - Sydney Leonard, Lorraine Colpitts’ niece, will be first up for a haircut on Sept. 15 to benefit Locks of Love.
Then will come Colpitt's herself, her daughters-in-law, her 5-year-old granddaughter and anyone else she can round up for the worthy cause.
Colpitts’ company, Safe and Sound Youth Transportation Inc., will sponsor the benefit for the National Locks of Love Campaign 6 p.m.-midnight Saturday, Sept. 15, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.
"Every day, people have their hair cut. We have many young people in America who would cherish that which we are able to grow — free to us, invaluable to a child suffering from many illnesses and situations that make them unable to grow hair," said Colpitts.
Hair stylists will be on hand at the event to cut the hair of donors.
It takes three or more 10-inch segments of hair plus $3,500 to make one custom-fitted hairpiece for each child who suffers from hair loss or inability to grow hair due to illness or disease.
Colpitts also will collect hair that is cut before or after the event.
"I have many donated hairpieces already," Colpitts said, "and a few before-and-after pics, courtesy of Scissors Excitement. They have been extremely helpful and generous toward this project."
Prior donors will be included in the Locks of Love count and may attend the celebration event at Jeff’s Catering. Call Colpitts at 989-4200 to arrange pickup of cut hair donations.
The evening will include entertainment, prize drawings and a buffet featuring a chocolate fountain. A cash bar will be available.
Those who donate time, hair or money to the event will be eligible for prize drawings.
"I am hoping for at least 100 Locks of Love and the funds necessary to process donations, to make at least 30 hairpieces for those who would benefit from them," Colpitts said.
Lorraine Colpitts owns and operates Safe and Sound Youth Transportation Inc. in Brewer.
The company provides therapeutic intervention and transport for at-risk teens in the United States.
